During my 6 years of primary school, I remember vividly my lunches. I grew up eating porridge with sides home cooked by my SAHM. It’s always long beans with silver fish, salted eggs, fried egg with fish cake or something and pan-fried fish.
Because we (plus my sister) ate these almost on a daily basis, we grew quite sick of it. I think my sister even has a bit of phobia of porridge.
But when I have my own kids, I realise that it’s a part joy and part chore to be able to whip a meal that seems as simple as 清粥小菜 (plain porridge with simple sides). Chore, because of the chopping, cooking and cleaning. Joy because home cooked is the best for the kids (minus the luncheon of course.. Din give them any of it)
So here it is, my version of 清粥小菜 on a dark cloudy day.
